Bike Rental Weligama
Sri Lanka’s friendliest surf town – a wide, sheltered bay with the gentlest learner-friendly waves on the south coast, a charming fishing harbour, and the extraordinary Taprobane Island just offshore. Perfectly positioned at the heart of the south coast between Galle Fort to the west and Mirissa, Matara, Hiriketiya, and the wild coastline towards Tangalle to the east. Check every surf break at dawn, reach Galle Fort for breakfast, and return for the afternoon session.

Why Rent a Bike in Weligama?
Check every surf break at dawn. On a rental motorcycle you can do the complete morning surf check – riding from Weligama west to Midigama and Ahangama, then east to Mirissa and Hiriketiya – in 45 minutes before anyone else has paddled out. No surf app, no guessing, no second-hand reports – you can personally assess every break between the Lazy Left at Midigama and the horseshoe bay at Hiriketiya before deciding where to spend your morning. The Yamaha FZ V4 160cc is the perfect bike for this early dawn circuit.
Reach Galle Fort in 45 minutes. The UNESCO World Heritage Galle Fort is just 35km west of Weligama – a beautiful 45-minute coastal ride through Ahangama, Koggala, and Unawatuna. With a rental bike you can ride to Galle for breakfast, spend 3 hours exploring the cobblestone streets and Dutch ramparts, swim at Unawatuna on the way back, and return to Weligama in time for the afternoon surf session. One of the most satisfying day trips on the south coast – and completely impossible without your own transport.
Discover hidden east coast beaches. Hiriketiya, Dickwella, and the wild coastline approaching Tangalle are all accessible by bike but effectively invisible to visitors without their own transport. The tour buses do not go there. The tuk tuks are expensive. But on a rental motorcycle the hidden coves, secret surf breaks, and empty beaches between Weligama and Tangalle open up in a single morning ride – 52km of the south coast’s most dramatic and undeveloped shoreline.
Connect the full south coast circuit. Weligama sits at the midpoint of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful coastal highway – between Galle Fort (35km west) and Tangalle (52km east), between Colombo (155km north-west) and Arugam Bay (far east). A rental bike turns Weligama into the ideal base for exploring both directions along the finest coastal highway in Sri Lanka. No other position on the south coast gives you such effortless access to such an extraordinary range of surf, heritage, wildlife, and scenery in every direction.

Our top recommendation for Weligama: Yamaha FZ V4 160cc ($18/day) – powerful, smooth, and perfectly suited to the south coast. Whether you are doing the morning surf point circuit from Midigama to Mirissa, the day ride to Galle Fort, the east coast run to Tangalle, or the one-way journey to Colombo, the FZ V4 handles every south coast route with confidence and comfort. It is the ideal surf town motorcycle – quick enough to check multiple breaks in a single morning, comfortable enough for a full day in the saddle. Ask about availability when booking.
For local Weligama bay road only: the Honda Dio 110cc automatic scooter ($8/day) is perfect – no gear changing, easy to handle, and ideal for the flat bay road and harbour lane. Surfboard carrying: we include bungee cords with every rental – short boards and fish boards can be secured across the seat. Always test the setup at low speed before joining the A2 coastal highway. Driving Tips for Weligama and the South Coast
Famous Places to Visit in Weligama by Bike
Weligama Bay & Surf Beach
Weligama’s magnificent wide bay is a 2km crescent of golden sand with the most forgiving, learner-friendly surf waves on the south coast. The consistent beach break produces gentle, long-period waves ideal for beginners learning to surf, while the right-hand point at the western end of the bay produces more challenging waves for experienced surfers. Dozens of surf schools operate from the beach and the beachside cafe strip is one of the most relaxed and welcoming on the entire south coast. The City Bicycle is perfect for the bay road circuit.
Taprobane Island
One of the most extraordinary private properties in Sri Lanka, Taprobane Island is a tiny coconut palm-covered island 200 metres offshore from Weligama Bay – accessible by wading at low tide. The island is home to a single extraordinary colonial villa built by a French count in the 1930s and later owned by author Paul Bowles. The sight of Taprobane floating in Weligama Bay with the surf breaking around it is one of the south coast’s most iconic images – best photographed from the bay road in the early morning light or at sunset.
Midigama & Lazy Left – 5km West
One of the finest surf breaks on the south coast, the Lazy Left at Midigama is a long, mellow left-hand reef break producing rides of 100 metres or more in good conditions – perfect for longboarders and improvers wanting to progress beyond Weligama’s beach break. The small surf village at Midigama has a handful of excellent budget guesthouses and the most authentic surf community atmosphere on the south coast. Always the first stop on the morning surf check circuit – a 10-minute ride west from Weligama at dawn.
Ahangama – Stilt Fishermen & Coconuts Surf
Ahangama is home to both the Coconuts surf break – a powerful hollow right-hander for experienced surfers – and the famous traditional stilt fishermen who balance on poles offshore and fish with traditional rods. The stilt fishermen are best photographed in early morning (6:00–9:00 AM) and late afternoon (4:00–6:00 PM) when the golden light silhouettes them against the Indian Ocean in one of the south coast’s most iconic photographic experiences. One of the best reasons to request an early morning delivery.
Galle Fort – 35km West
The finest colonial heritage site in Sri Lanka and a UNESCO World Heritage destination, the 17th-century Dutch Galle Fort with its 3km of ancient ramparts, cobblestone streets, colonial mansions, and excellent boutique hotels and restaurants is one of the most extraordinary places in Sri Lanka. Ride west from Weligama in the early morning before the tour buses arrive. Spend 2–3 hours exploring the fort on foot, have breakfast or lunch inside the ramparts, and return to Weligama in time for the afternoon surf session.
Unawatuna Beach – 25km West
One of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful beaches in a perfect sheltered bay with calm swimming water and excellent snorkelling on the reef. The ride west from Weligama to Unawatuna passes through Ahangama, Koggala Lake with its famous stilt fishermen and Cinnamon Island, and the fishing village of Yaddehimulla – each kilometre revealing a new reason to stop. A perfect half-day excursion from Weligama that combines easily with a Galle Fort visit on the same day.
Mirissa Beach – 10km East
Sri Lanka’s most beautiful beach destination is just 10km east of Weligama – the closest major attraction to the town. Mirissa’s perfect horseshoe bay, legendary whale watching harbour, and iconic Parrot Rock viewpoint are all within 15 minutes riding. Ride your rental bike to the Mirissa harbour at 6:00 AM for the whale watching departure (November to April season), return by midday, and still have time for the afternoon surf back in Weligama. The perfect Weligama day combination.
Hiriketiya Beach – 22km East
One of Sri Lanka’s most beloved hidden beaches – a perfect small horseshoe bay with excellent surf, crystal-clear water, and a growing community of surf cafes and yoga retreats that have made Hiriketiya one of the south coast’s most talked-about destinations. The access road down to Hiriketiya from the A2 highway is steep and rough in sections – ride slowly on the descent and do not attempt in wet conditions on a low-powered scooter. The beach at the bottom is worth every bend of the approach road.
Matara Fort & Town – 28km East
Sri Lanka’s southernmost city contains the Matara Dutch Fort and the exquisitely formed Star Fort surrounded by a moat – two of the finest examples of Dutch colonial fortification in the country. The bustling Matara market and Polhena reef beach – excellent for turtle snorkelling year-round – are nearby. A perfect half-day ride combining history, wildlife, and authentic Sri Lankan city life completely unlike the tourist resort strip of the west coast.
Dondra Head Lighthouse – 35km East
The southernmost point of Sri Lanka – standing at this magnificent 49-metre colonial lighthouse built in 1889 you can say with certainty that there is nothing but open Indian Ocean between you and Antarctica. The surrounding headland at Dondra Head offers dramatic and utterly exposed views of the open ocean with waves breaking on the rocky shoreline in every direction. A profoundly atmospheric destination that most visitors to Weligama never reach because they do not have their own transport.
Dickwella & Hummanaya Blowhole – 35km East
The Hummanaya Blowhole is the second largest in Asia – a dramatic natural rock formation where ocean waves explode upward through a narrow channel in a geyser reaching 20 metres in height. Best seen in the afternoon when incoming swells are at their strongest. The Dickwella area also has excellent surf breaks and the dramatic Wewurukannala seated Buddha complex – one of the largest Buddha statues in Sri Lanka – is clearly visible from the A2 highway on the approach.
Tangalle & Medaketiya Beach – 52km East
One of the south coast’s most beautiful and authentic towns surrounded by some of the finest uncrowded beaches in Sri Lanka – Medaketiya, Marakolliya, and the wild Rekawa turtle nesting beach. The town has a beautiful natural harbour and some of the best fresh seafood at local prices on the entire south coast. The scenery becomes progressively more dramatic with every kilometre east of Dickwella – the road to Tangalle is one of the finest coastal rides in Sri Lanka.
Koggala Lake & Stilt Fishermen – 18km West
Beautiful Koggala Lake is a vast freshwater lagoon home to the stilt fishermen, Cinnamon Island boat tours, and rich birdlife in the mangrove margins and open water. The ride west from Weligama to Koggala passes through the Ahangama surf community and several atmospheric fishing villages. The combination of Koggala Lake in the morning and Unawatuna Beach in the afternoon – with Galle Fort between them – makes for one of the finest full-day coastal rides on the south coast.
Weligama Fishing Harbour
Weligama’s authentic working fishing harbour sits at the eastern end of the bay. Between 5:00–8:00 AM the fishing fleet returns with tuna, swordfish, and reef fish being unloaded and sold on the harbour wall – one of the most vivid and genuine daily scenes on the entire south coast. The harbour is the real local heart of Weligama – completely removed from the tourist surf scene – and is best experienced on a bicycle at dawn when the boats are coming in and the day’s catch is still being sorted on the quayside.
Ridiyagama Safari Park – 40km North
A well-regarded wildlife safari park home to elephants, leopards, sloth bears, and waterbirds in a dry zone tank landscape. The ride north from Weligama climbs through rubber and tea estates before descending into the dry zone interior – a complete change of landscape and atmosphere from the coastal south coast that most Weligama visitors never experience. The Ridiyagama safari run is a perfect contrast day – inland wildlife in the morning, back to the surf in the afternoon.
Full Day Weligama South Coast Surf & Heritage Circuit by Bike
Total distance: approximately 130km
Best bike: Yamaha FZ V4 160cc or Honda X Blade 160cc
Tip: The dawn stilt fisherman ride at Ahangama is one of the great photographic experiences on the south coast – golden hour light silhouetting the fishermen against the Indian Ocean in a scene that has defined south coast Sri Lanka photography for generations.
