Rekawa Turtle Beach & Lagoon

Marakolliya Beach
One of the most beautiful and least-visited beaches in Sri Lanka – a wild, exposed stretch of golden sand backed by a lagoon and flanked by rocky headlands. Virtually empty even in peak season.

Mulgirigala Rock Monastery
1st century BC Buddhist cave temples carved into a massive granite rock rising from the jungle. Reclining Buddha statues, ancient ceiling frescoes, and panoramic views from 500 steps to the summit dagoba.
Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary
A mosaic of lagoons, mangroves, and dry zone scrub home to painted storks, pelicans, spoonbills, sea eagles, and dozens of migrant species. Best between October and March. Bicycle ideal for slow sanctuary road.
Dickwella & Wewurukannala Buddha
Two extraordinary attractions – the Hummanaya Blowhole (second largest in Asia, waves exploding 20m above the cliff) plus a 50-metre seated Buddha statue with extraordinary painted diorama floors.
Bundala National Park

Yes, Tangalle is one of the most beginner-friendly places on the south coast. The town roads are quiet, the coastal highway west to Matara is flat and well-surfaced, and the short rides to Rekawa and Mulgirigala are straightforward. We recommend the Honda Dio 110cc automatic scooter for beginner riders. Do not attempt the sandy beach access tracks until you are comfortable on the main roads.
