Bike Rental Nuwara Eliya
Sri Lanka’s highest city at 1,868 metres above sea level – the emerald capital of Ceylon tea country. Known as “Little England” for its colonial architecture, manicured gardens, golf course, and cool misty highland climate, Nuwara Eliya is surrounded by one of the most beautiful landscapes in Asia. Ride through endless tea estates, reach remote waterfalls, tackle the legendary Ramboda Pass, and stand at the edge of World’s End in Horton Plains. The greatest highland riding in Sri Lanka.

Why Rent a Bike in Nuwara Eliya?
Ride through the world’s most beautiful tea estates. Nuwara Eliya sits at the centre of Sri Lanka’s greatest tea-growing region. The estate roads that wind between the tea bushes are private and inaccessible by foot for most visitors. On a rental motorcycle you can ride slowly through the estates, stop anywhere to photograph the tea pluckers at work in the early morning light, and experience this emerald highland paradise from the inside rather than from a tour bus window. The finest estate roads – Labukele, Pedro, Mackwoods, and dozens of unnamed estate tracks – are all accessible on a bike and inaccessible by any other means.
Reach the finest viewpoints on your own schedule. The highland region around Nuwara Eliya has dozens of spectacular viewpoints accessible only by vehicle. Single Tree Hill at sunrise, Pidurutalagala above the clouds, the Ambewela farmland panorama at 2,000 metres, and the dramatic Horton Plains escarpment at World’s End can all be reached on a rental bike at exactly the time of day that gives the best light and the fewest other visitors. A rental bike means arriving before dawn for Single Tree Hill and being at the Horton Plains entrance before 7:00 AM for cloud-free views – timing impossible without your own transport.
Escape the town and find the real highlands. Nuwara Eliya town itself is compact and easily walked. The extraordinary landscape that makes Nuwara Eliya famous starts just outside the town limits and extends for 50km in every direction – Ramboda Pass to the north, Horton Plains to the south, Hakgala and the Sita Eliya gorge to the southeast, and hundreds of square kilometres of tea estate country in between. A rental bike is the only practical way to explore this vast highland region properly during a short stay.
Connect the great highland destinations. Nuwara Eliya sits at the midpoint of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated motorcycle route – the Kandy to Ella road via Ramboda Pass and the tea estates. Renting a bike in Nuwara Eliya allows you to ride this legendary route in segments, explore in both directions from your highland base, and make detours to hidden destinations that through-riders always miss. One day south to Ella, one day north through Ramboda to Kandy, one day west to Adam’s Peak – Nuwara Eliya as a central base gives you Sri Lanka’s entire hill country.
Experience the highlands in all weathers. Nuwara Eliya’s weather changes rapidly and dramatically – mist, sunshine, cloud, and rain can all occur within a single hour at 1,868 metres altitude. On a rental bike you can chase the sunshine across the plateau, position yourself at a viewpoint the moment the clouds part, and appreciate the extraordinary quality of highland light – the dramatic low-angle rays through mist on tea estate slopes – that landscape photographers travel from across the world to capture. There is no bad day for a motorcycle ride in Nuwara Eliya, only different kinds of beautiful.

Driving Tips for Nuwara Eliya Highland Roads
Famous Places to Visit in Nuwara Eliya by Bike
Gregory Lake & Victoria Park
The beautiful Gregory Lake sits in the heart of Nuwara Eliya town and is the social centrepiece of the colonial hill station. Ride the scenic perimeter road around the lake for views of the surrounding tea-covered hills reflected in the still water at dawn, when the surface is perfectly calm and the morning mist clings to the tea estates above. Adjacent Victoria Park is a beautifully maintained colonial-era botanical garden famous for its rose garden and as one of the finest birdwatching sites in Sri Lanka – the highland-endemic Sri Lanka white-eye and yellow-eared bulbul are regularly spotted here. A perfect gentle first ride from your hotel. Entry: LKR 200.
Nuwara Eliya Racetrack & Golf Course
One of Asia’s finest colonial-era sporting venues, the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club and Horse Racing Track form an extraordinary relic of the British hill station era at 1,868 metres altitude – the highest golf course in Sri Lanka. The 18-hole course is beautifully maintained and the colonial grandstand is remarkable even when racing is not on. The famous April racing season transforms all of Nuwara Eliya – the entire country comes to the hill station for the Nuwara Eliya Races and flower festival, the most socially celebrated event in Sri Lankan calendar. Ride past the grandstand and colonial clubhouse for an extraordinary glimpse of a preserved British hill station world.
Ramboda Falls & Pass
Sri Lanka’s third highest waterfall, Ramboda Falls plunges 109 metres down a cliff face directly beside the main A5 Kandy to Nuwara Eliya highway. The falls are visible from the road with a viewing area and tea stall – a natural stop on the ride north. The Ramboda Pass itself is one of the most dramatic sections of highway in Sri Lanka – a series of breathtaking hairpin bends descending 600 metres through cloud forest with views back up to the Nuwara Eliya plateau. Riding the Ramboda Pass is one of the genuinely unmissable motorcycle experiences in South Asia. Ride north from Nuwara Eliya to experience the full drama of this mountain road. Free entry.
Lover’s Leap Waterfall
Hidden in the forest above the Labukele Tea Estate 12km northwest of Nuwara Eliya, Lover’s Leap is a beautiful 30-metre waterfall accessible by a short walking trail through the estate. The waterfall takes its romantic name from a local legend and the surrounding montane forest is one of the most beautiful in the central highlands. The estate road to the trailhead is accessible only by motorcycle or on foot – one of the finest examples of the exclusive highland access that a rental bike provides in Nuwara Eliya. A peaceful and rewarding half-day ride through tea country to a hidden waterfall that most Nuwara Eliya visitors never find.
Pidurutalagala – Mount Pedro Summit Road
At 2,524 metres, Pidurutalagala is the highest mountain in Sri Lanka. The summit itself is restricted by the Sri Lanka Air Force communications facility, but the lower sections of the summit road above Nuwara Eliya offer extraordinary views of the entire highland plateau, Gregory Lake below, the town of Nuwara Eliya spread across the valley, and on clear days the distant coastal plains far below. Ride the summit road as high as the security checkpoint allows for the finest bird’s-eye view of Nuwara Eliya – a perspective that no other viewpoint in the highlands can match. The road is steep – a suitable bike is recommended.
Horton Plains NP & World’s End
One of Sri Lanka’s most spectacular natural environments, Horton Plains National Park is a high-altitude grassland plateau at 2,100–2,300 metres home to sambar deer, leopards, and endemic highland birds. The dramatic highlight is World’s End – a sheer cliff dropping 870 metres straight down to the lowland jungle, one of the most breathtaking natural viewpoints in Asia. Arrive at the park entrance by 6:30 AM for cloud-free views before morning cloud closes in after 9:00 AM. The 4km walking circuit visits both World’s End and Baker’s Falls. Ride south from Nuwara Eliya through Pattipola to reach the park. Entry: USD $25.
Baker’s Falls – Horton Plains
Inside Horton Plains National Park, Baker’s Falls is a beautiful 20-metre cascade named after the famous British explorer Samuel Baker who visited the highland plateau in 1846. The falls are reached by the 4km walking circuit from the park entrance that also passes World’s End – both highlights are covered in the same trail. The walk winds through cloud forest, open montane grassland with sambar deer grazing in the mist, and beside clear highland streams that eventually flow all the way to the coast. A genuinely magical highland walk included in the Horton Plains park ticket (USD $25). Best in the early morning before clouds arrive.
Ambewela Farm – New Zealand of Sri Lanka
Known as the New Zealand of Sri Lanka, Ambewela Farm is a high-altitude dairy farm at 2,000 metres where cows, sheep, and goats graze on rolling green hillside pastures in a scene more reminiscent of the European Alps than tropical Asia. The farm produces Milco dairy products and offers farm tours where visitors can interact with the animals, watch milking, and buy fresh dairy products straight from the source. The surrounding landscape is extraordinarily beautiful – particularly in the early morning when mist fills the valley below and the green pastures glow in the first highland sunlight. The most surprising landscape in Sri Lanka.
Hakgala Botanical Gardens
Sri Lanka’s second most important botanical garden, Hakgala Gardens at 1,740 metres altitude contain a spectacular highland collection of roses, orchids, tree ferns, cacti, and ancient eucalyptus avenues. Originally established as a cinchona plantation for quinine production during the British colonial era, the gardens are now a beautifully maintained highland park with rose walks, mountain views, and extraordinary tree specimens. The adjacent Hakgala Rock is sacred in the Ramayana – believed to be the piece of the Himalayas that Hanuman brought to cure Lakshmana’s wounds. A perfect afternoon visit after the morning highland circuit. Entry: LKR 2,000 for foreigners.
Pedro Tea Estate & Factory
One of Nuwara Eliya’s finest and most accessible working tea factories, the Pedro Tea Estate is just 3km from the town centre and offers guided factory tours showing every stage of the tea manufacturing process – withering, rolling, oxidising, drying, and grading. The estate produces some of Sri Lanka’s finest high-grown tea, celebrated worldwide for its delicate golden colour and distinctive highland flavour developed at altitude in the cool mountain air. The tour concludes with a tea tasting comparing different grades and varieties. The estate fields surrounding the factory are beautiful to ride through in the early morning when pluckers are working. Entry: LKR 500.
Mackwoods Labookellie Tea Estate
Sri Lanka’s most famous roadside tea estate, Mackwoods Labookellie sits directly beside the A5 Kandy to Nuwara Eliya highway 10km north of town and welcomes all visitors to watch tea plucking in the estate fields and take a free factory tour showing the full tea production process. The tearoom overlooking the green estate is one of the most scenic tea experiences in Sri Lanka – sit with a cup of pure estate tea and watch the pluckers working the hillside rows. The estate is perfectly positioned beside the highway with easy bike parking right outside. Stop here on the ride north towards Ramboda Falls – free entry and factory tour.
Seetha Amman Temple – Sita Eliya
One of the most sacred Hindu temples in Sri Lanka and a major pilgrimage site for Tamil Hindus across the island, the Seetha Amman Temple at Sita Eliya 6km from Nuwara Eliya is built at the site where Sita is believed to have been held captive by King Ravana in the Ramayana epic. The temple sits beside the beautiful Kothmale Oya river in a deeply forested gorge with dramatic mountain scenery above. The combination of profound religious significance and spectacular natural highland setting makes this one of the most memorable and atmospheric short rides from Nuwara Eliya. Free entry – remove shoes before entering the temple.
Galway’s Land National Park
A small but critically important highland forest reserve on the outskirts of Nuwara Eliya town, Galway’s Land protects a precious fragment of the natural montane forest that once covered the entire Nuwara Eliya plateau before tea cultivation transformed the highlands in the 19th century. The park is one of the finest birdwatching sites in Sri Lanka, with numerous highland-endemic species recorded including the Sri Lanka whistling thrush, dusky-blue flycatcher, Ceylon hill myna, and Sri Lanka white-eye. A beautiful and easily accessible slice of highland wilderness minutes from the town centre. Entry: LKR 500.
Single Tree Hill Viewpoint
A magnificent 360-degree panoramic viewpoint 4km from Nuwara Eliya reached by a winding estate road through some of the finest tea country in Sri Lanka. A single ancient eucalyptus tree marks the hilltop, offering sweeping views of the Nuwara Eliya plateau, Gregory Lake shimmering below, the surrounding tea estates rolling to every horizon, and the highland peaks beyond. The estate road to the viewpoint is accessible only by motorcycle or on foot – one of the most rewarding short rides in the entire hill country. Best at sunrise when the valley is filled with mist and the first gold light breaks across the tea estate slopes. Arrive by 5:45 AM for the finest view.
Nuwara Eliya Town – Colonial Architecture
Nuwara Eliya’s town centre is a perfectly preserved slice of British colonial India transported to a Sri Lankan mountain plateau at 1,868 metres. The grand Hill Club (built 1876, still operating as a private members club with a famous English pub), the pink-painted Grand Hotel (1891), the colonial post office, St. Xavier’s Church, and the bustling Nuwara Eliya Municipal Market are all clustered within easy riding distance. Ride slowly through the town in the cool morning air before the tourist buses arrive and admire the extraordinary preservation of this unique colonial hill station. The early morning market is a riot of colour with highland vegetables, strawberries, spices, and cut flowers.
One Day Nuwara Eliya Highland Circuit by Bike
Total distance: approximately 90km
Riding time: 2.5 hours (full day with stops)
Best bike: Honda X Blade 160cc or Honda ADV 160cc
Tip: Bring warm layers for the 5:30 AM start – Nuwara Eliya mornings are genuinely cold at this altitude and Single Tree Hill is exposed. The Hakgala to Ambewela leg in the early afternoon is the most scenic section of this circuit. If mist rolls in during the return north, take shelter at Mackwoods tearoom and wait for it to clear before tackling Ramboda Pass.

Frequently Asked Questions – Bike Rental Nuwara Eliya
We deliver from our Negombo depot to Nuwara Eliya – approximately 170km and 5 hours via Kandy and the A5 mountain highway. The delivery fee is $50 each way. We deliver 7 days a week. We recommend booking at least 24 hours in advance, or 48 hours during peak season (January to April). For very early morning delivery to coincide with a Single Tree Hill sunrise ride or a pre-dawn Horton Plains start, book the previous day and request a 6:00 AM arrival. We contact you 1 hour before arriving.
The Honda X Blade 160cc ($14/day) is our most recommended bike for Nuwara Eliya. It has sufficient power for all mountain passes including the Ramboda Pass and the Horton Plains road, handles well on winding highland roads, and is comfortable for a full day of riding. For more adventurous routes including estate tracks and off-road highland paths, the Honda ADV 160cc ($25/day) or Hero XPulse 200cc ($18/day) are the best choices. We do not recommend low-powered scooters (Honda Dio, Burgman) for the Ramboda Pass or Horton Plains road – contact us with your planned routes and we will give honest advice on the right bike for your experience level.
Nuwara Eliya is safe and rewarding for riders with some prior motorcycle experience. The mountain roads require more care than flat coastal roads – steep gradients, tight hairpin bends, cold tyres, mist, and large buses on narrow roads are the main considerations. We provide a detailed highland safety briefing covering cold weather riding, mountain pass technique, and the specific hazards of Nuwara Eliya’s highland roads with every rental. Beginners should stay to the town area and flat estate roads on low-powered scooters. More experienced riders will find the highland roads exhilarating and completely manageable.
Cold weather preparation is the most important consideration for Nuwara Eliya riders. You need: a full-face helmet (provided with rental), a warm jacket or fleece (essential – temperatures reach 8–12 degrees Celsius in the early morning), long trousers for warmth and protection, gloves if available (hands get very cold on early morning highland rides), closed-toe shoes or boots (never flip flops on mountain roads), and a lightweight rain poncho stored under the seat. The cold genuinely surprises most visitors arriving from the coast – do not underestimate it. We advise all Nuwara Eliya riders to purchase a fleece or light jacket in the town before their first early morning ride.
Yes – the 25km ride from Nuwara Eliya to Horton Plains via Pattipola is one of the highlights of a Nuwara Eliya bike rental. We recommend the Honda X Blade 160cc or Honda ADV 160cc for this route. The critical timing point is the park entrance – arrive before 6:30 AM for cloud-free views at World’s End. After 9:00 AM the clouds typically close in and the dramatic 870-metre viewpoint disappears. Entry fee is USD $25 per person paid at the park entrance. Book your Horton Plains tickets in advance during peak season.
Yes – this is one of our most popular arrangements for Nuwara Eliya. The Kandy to Nuwara Eliya train on the famous hill country railway is one of the world’s great scenic railway experiences – and arriving by train and continuing by motorbike is the perfect way to explore the hill country. Book in advance, tell us your train arrival time at Nanu Oya Station (the Nuwara Eliya railway station), and we will have your rental bike delivered and waiting at your hotel. Start riding immediately after checking in.
Yes! This is our most popular one-way arrangement in the highland region. Collect your bike in Kandy and ride the spectacular 80km Ramboda Pass road south to Nuwara Eliya – stopping at Mackwoods Labookellie estate and Ramboda Falls viewpoint along the way. Drop the bike at your Nuwara Eliya hotel for a one-way fee. From Nuwara Eliya you can continue south to Ella or west to Colombo on subsequent days. See our Bike Rental Kandy page for collection details in Kandy. One-way drop-off fees apply – ask about pricing when booking.
January to April is generally the best time for Nuwara Eliya by motorcycle – the climate is cool and dry with excellent visibility on the mountain roads and clear views from the highland viewpoints. The April season is particularly lively with the famous Nuwara Eliya races and flower festival. July and August are also good with less rainfall and excellent riding conditions. May and October see the highest rainfall and the most mist on the highland roads. That said, the Nuwara Eliya landscape is extraordinarily beautiful in any weather – morning mist on the tea estates can be more atmospheric than clear sunshine – and we deliver bikes year-round.
