Negombo Beach
Negombo’s long golden beach stretches 10km along the Indian Ocean coastline and is the heart of the city’s tourist scene. Ride along Lewis Place Road and Porutota Road for stunning ocean views, stop at beachside cafes for fresh coconut and kottu roti, and watch the sunset from the shore as traditional fishing outrigger boats (oruvas) return with the evening catch. The northern end of the beach near Ethukale is quieter and less crowded than the main tourist strip. Free entry, always open.
Lellama Fish Market
One of Sri Lanka’s most spectacular authentic experiences, the Negombo fish market at Lellama comes alive before dawn every morning as fishing boats return with the night’s catch. Arrive between 6:00–8:00 AM to witness the incredible spectacle of tuna, swordfish, giant prawns, crabs, and hundreds of other species being auctioned, filleted, and loaded onto trucks. The sights, sounds, and smells are utterly unforgettable. Easily the best reason to set an early alarm in Negombo. Park your bicycle or scooter near the market gate for easy access.
Dutch Canal – Hamilton Canal
Built by Dutch colonists in the 17th century, the Hamilton Canal is a 120km network of inland waterways connecting Negombo to Colombo and beyond. Ride along the canal banks through lush tropical vegetation, watch fishermen casting nets from wooden bridges, and explore the peaceful villages that line the waterway. The canal is still used by traditional wooden boats carrying goods between communities. A hidden gem that most Negombo tourists completely miss and one of the finest bicycle rides on the west coast.
St. Mary’s Church
One of Sri Lanka’s most magnificent Roman Catholic churches, St. Mary’s in Negombo town centre is a stunning example of colonial ecclesiastical architecture. Built in 1874 on the site of an earlier Portuguese church, St. Mary’s features extraordinary hand-painted ceiling murals depicting scenes from the life of Christ – widely considered some of the finest religious artwork in Sri Lanka. Negombo is known as the “Little Rome of Asia” for its exceptional concentration of Catholics, and St. Mary’s is the spiritual heart of this community. Free entry during opening hours.
Negombo Lagoon
The vast Negombo Lagoon stretches 15km inland from the coast and is one of Sri Lanka’s most important fishery ecosystems. Although only the entrance gateway and sections of the walls survive, the fort is surrounded by fascinating Dutch-era buildings including the old Dutch Rest House (now a hotel), the Dutch Period Museum, and colonial warehouses that once stored Sri Lankan cinnamon for export to Europe. Muthurajawela Wetland Reserve
Sri Lanka’s largest coastal peat bog and one of South Asia’s most important wetland ecosystems, the Muthurajawela Marsh stretches across 3,000 hectares between Negombo and Colombo. A beautiful colonial-era Catholic church 1km north of Negombo in the fishing village of Sea Street, St. Sebastian’s sits dramatically on the seafront overlooking the Indian Ocean. The church is particularly atmospheric at evening mass when local fishermen gather to pray before their night at sea – one of the most genuine and moving local experiences available to visitors in Negombo. The short coastal road north to Sea Street passes through authentic Sri Lankan fishing villages that are rarely visited by tourists on the main beach strip.
Waikkal & Marawila Beaches
Ride 15–25km north of Negombo along the coastal road to discover some of Sri Lanka’s most unspoiled and uncrowded beaches. Waikkal, Marawila, and the beaches further north are where local Sri Lankans come to swim and relax – far from the tourist crowds of the Negombo strip. The coastal road north of Negombo is flat, well-surfaced, and scenically beautiful with coconut palms lining the shore and traditional fishing boats beached at every village. Chilaw & Munneswaram Temple
Continue 45km north of Negombo to reach Chilaw, a charming coastal town famous for its lagoon seafood and the ancient Munneswaram Hindu Temple – one of the five sacred Siva temples of Sri Lanka, believed to have been founded over 1,000 years ago. The Munneswaram complex is spectacular and deeply atmospheric, drawing pilgrims from across the island. The Chilaw lagoon restaurants serve the freshest crabs and prawns at very local prices. Wilpattu National Park – 100km North
Sri Lanka’s largest national park and one of the world’s best places to see wild leopards, Wilpattu is 100km north of Negombo through Puttalam and the vast salt flats of Sri Lanka’s northwest coast. The park has the highest leopard density in Sri Lanka and also hosts elephants, sloth bears, saltwater crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species. The 2.5-hour ride north passes through the dramatic dry zone landscape – dramatically different from the lush green south. Book a jeep safari at the park entrance. A full day is recommended.
Katuwapitiya Church – Coastal Ride North
Five kilometres north of Negombo on the coastal road sits the beautiful Katuwapitiya Church – another landmark of Negombo’s extraordinary Catholic heritage, set dramatically between the road and the sea. Negombo to Colombo – 35km
The most popular short ride from Negombo runs south along the coastal road through Wattala, Ja-Ela, and Seeduwa into Colombo. The route passes through busy Sri Lankan suburbs with glimpses of the ocean, traditional fishing villages, and the authentic rhythm of west coast life. Arrive at Galle Face Green for the city’s magnificent ocean promenade, explore the Dutch Fort district and Pettah market, and return north in the afternoon. A perfect introduction ride for first-timers getting comfortable with Sri Lankan traffic.
Negombo to Kandy via A1 Highway – 115km
Head southeast on the A1 highway through Colombo and up into the central highlands to reach Kandy – Sri Lanka’s cultural capital and home of the sacred Temple of the Tooth. The route climbs steadily from sea level to over 500 metres, passing through Kegalle’s rubber plantations and the dramatic Kadugannawa mountain pass before descending into the beautiful Kandy valley. Negombo to Sigiriya – 130km

Ride north along Sri Lanka’s uncrowded northwest coastal road through Waikkal, Marawila, and Bangadeniya to reach Chilaw. Our minimum rental period is one full day ($8). Yes – you need a valid driving licence from your home country plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Both documents must be presented together. Your home country licence alone is not sufficient in Sri Lanka.
