Kataragama Maha Devalaya

The sacred heart of Kataragama – a multi-faith temple complex unique in the world where Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, and Veddha shrines coexist in a single precinct. The pre-dawn puja at 4:30 AM is one of the most extraordinary religious experiences in Asia.

Kiri Vehera Dagoba

One of the most sacred Buddhist monuments in the deep south, believed to have been built in the 1st century BC to enshrine relics of the Buddha. The gleaming white dagoba stands within the temple complex surrounded by ancient bo trees and the constant sound of drums.

Menik Ganga (Sacred River)

The sacred river dividing Kataragama town from the temple precinct. Pilgrims wade across at the ford to ritually purify themselves before entering the shrines. Extraordinarily atmospheric at dawn when mist rises off the water and the first light filters through the jungle.

Yala National Park

Sri Lanka’s most famous national park – home to the world’s highest density of wild leopards, plus elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species. Morning safaris (5:30 AM) offer the best leopard sightings. Book jeep safaris in advance – spots fill quickly.

Yala Block 5 (Northern Yala)

The northern sections of Yala accessible from the Kataragama side offer a less crowded wildlife experience than the main Block 1. Excellent elephant viewing and good leopard habitat. Ask at the park entrance about northern block access – often quieter even in peak season.

Sithulpawwa Rock Monastery

A 2nd-century BC Buddhist monastery built into massive granite boulders rising from the Yala jungle – once housing 12,000 monks. Cave temples, dagobas, and a summit viewpoint over the Yala wilderness. Peacocks roam the grounds; elephants occasionally seen on the access road.

Tissamaharama & Tissa Wewa

The ancient capital of the Ruhuna Kingdom, 12km west of Kataragama. The Tissa Wewa reservoir – built in the 3rd century BC – is a wildlife-rich lake where elephants regularly come to drink at dusk. The Tissa Maha Dagoba and Yatala Vehera are impressive ancient monuments.

Bundala National Park

Sri Lanka’s first Ramsar wetland site and one of Asia’s finest birding destinations. Migratory flamingos, painted storks, and dozens of waterbird species feed in the coastal lagoons. Elephants, crocodiles, and monitor lizards also seen regularly. Entry: LKR 2,500.

Hambantota & Salt Flats

Vast shallow evaporation pans of crystallising salt beside the coastal road – often pink with flamingos in feeding season. One of the most visually striking landscapes on the south coast. The ride west from Kataragama is flat, fast, and passes through extraordinary dry zone scenery.

Vedahitikanda (Rock Viewpoint)

The sacred rocky hill behind the Kataragama temple complex offers panoramic views of the Menik Ganga river, the jungle landscape, and the distant Yala wilderness to the east. The climb is part of the pilgrimage experience for many devotees. A short but rewarding excursion.

Kirinda Lighthouse & Beach

A remote rocky promontory topped by a colonial lighthouse with views across the Indian Ocean and the wild south coast. The Kirinda Vihara temple on the headland is where Queen Viharamahadevi was miraculously saved from the sea in the Mahavamsa chronicle. Beach below is wild and empty.

Kataragama Museum & Pilgrimage Path

The museum tells the history of this multi-faith sacred site from ancient times. The 1km tree-lined pilgrimage path from the museum along the river bank to the temple crossing has been walked by millions of pilgrims over 2,000 years – magnificent on a bicycle at dawn.

Kataragama to Yala National Park – 12km East

The most essential ride from Kataragama – the short journey east through the Yala buffer zone to the park entrance takes just 18 minutes. Book morning safaris (5:30 AM) and evening safaris (3:00 PM) in advance. Wildlife sightings are possible on the road even before entering the park.

Kataragama to Tissamaharama & Tissa Wewa – 12km West

The short ride west to Tissamaharama and the beautiful Tissa Wewa reservoir is perfect for an early morning elephant watch at the lake edge. Continue to the ancient Tissa Maha Dagoba and Yatala Vehera for a complete ancient southern kingdom experience in a half-day circuit.

Kataragama to Bundala & Hambantota – 35–40km West

Head west through Tissamaharama and along the south coast to Bundala National Park for flamingo and waterbird watching, and Hambantota for the dramatic salt flats. The western route covers the deep south’s finest coastal wildlife corridor.

Continue west through Bundala, Hambantota, and the coastal road to Tangalle – one of the south coast’s most beautiful and unspoiled towns. Covers the full deep south coastal wildlife corridor in a single ride. An excellent one-way route for riders continuing west to Mirissa and Galle.

Head south to the dramatic Kirinda headland lighthouse and the wild south coast beaches nearby. Return via the coastal road for Indian Ocean views and the deep south coastline. A perfect afternoon ride after the morning Yala safari.
