Galle Fort – UNESCO World Heritage Site
The jewel of Sri Lanka’s south coast, Galle Fort is a magnificently preserved Dutch colonial fortified city built in 1663 and expanded throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. The 90-acre fort is enclosed by massive stone ramparts running 3km along the seafront and contains a fascinating maze of cobblestone streets lined with Dutch colonial mansions, mosques, churches, boutique hotels, art galleries, and excellent restaurants. Park your bike near the Main Gate and explore on foot – the fort’s narrow streets are made for walking but the rampart roads are wonderful to ride at dawn and dusk.
Galle Fort Ramparts
The iconic ramparts of Galle Fort offer the finest coastal ride in Sri Lanka. The 3km rampart road runs along the top of the ancient sea walls with the Indian Ocean crashing against the rocks below and the colonial townscape of the fort on the other side. Ride or cycle the full rampart circuit at sunrise or sunset for a breathtaking experience. The Flag Rock bastion at the southwest corner of the fort is the best sunset viewpoint on the entire south coast. Free entry, always open.
Unawatuna Beach
Sri Lanka’s most famous beach, Unawatuna sits in a perfect crescent bay 5km east of Galle and has been voted one of the world’s best beaches multiple times. The sheltered bay offers calm swimming, excellent snorkelling over coral reefs, and a lively beach strip of restaurants and beach bars. Ride the short coastal road east from Galle for a perfect beach day – the road passes through the pretty village of Yaddehimulla with its colourful fishing boats and coconut vendors. Jungle Beach – Rumassala
Hidden behind the Rumassala promontory east of Unawatuna, Jungle Beach is one of Galle’s best-kept secrets – a tiny secluded cove accessible only by a 15-minute walk through the jungle from the parking area at Rumassala. The beach is rarely crowded, the water is crystal clear, and the snorkelling is excellent. Ride to Rumassala, park your bike at the car park, and walk down. The Rumassala hill is sacred in the Ramayana and offers panoramic views of Galle and the southern coast from the Peace Pagoda at the top.
Koggala Lake & Cinnamon Island
A vast and beautiful lagoon 12km east of Galle, Koggala Lake is home to several small islands including the famous Cinnamon Island where a family has cultivated cinnamon using traditional methods for generations. Arrange a boat tour from the lake shore to visit the island and learn about Sri Lanka’s most famous spice. The lake is also excellent for birdwatching with herons, kingfishers, and cormorants. Koggala is a long, largely undeveloped beach 12km east of Galle – perfect for those wanting to escape the busier Unawatuna scene. The Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum on the Koggala beach road is one of Sri Lanka’s finest cultural museums, celebrating the life and work of Sri Lanka’s greatest novelist. The open-air museum contains traditional village houses, fishing equipment, masks, and everyday objects from a vanishing way of coastal life. An unmissable stop on the ride east.
Hikkaduwa – 20km West
Sri Lanka’s original surf and dive destination, Hikkaduwa is 20km west of Galle along the A2 coastal highway and is the most popular day trip from Galle by bike. Famous for its coral sanctuary where you can snorkel with sea turtles directly from the beach, lively beach strip, surf breaks, and vibrant atmosphere – Hikkaduwa is a complete contrast to the refined colonial elegance of Galle. The 20-minute coastal ride west is flat, scenic, and passes through interesting fishing villages along the way.
Weligama Bay & Taprobane Island – 35km
Famous for its perfect beginner surf waves and the iconic Taprobane Island – a privately owned island villa accessible by wading at low tide – Weligama is one of the south coast’s most charming towns. The bay is perfect for learning to surf, and the town has excellent seafood restaurants along the beachfront. The traditional stilt fishermen who balance on poles in the water are also found just west of Weligama. Continue east from Weligama for another 15km to reach beautiful Mirissa Beach.
Mirissa Beach – 45km East
Sri Lanka’s most celebrated beach destination, Mirissa is a perfect horseshoe bay 45km east of Galle with turquoise water, golden sand, and legendary sunsets. Famous for whale watching – blue whales and sperm whales regularly spotted offshore between November and April – Mirissa is the perfect overnight stop on a south coast motorcycle tour. The ride from Galle to Mirissa along the A2 coastal highway on a clear morning, with the ocean glittering on your left the entire way, is one of the great rides in Asia.
Stilt Fishermen of Koggala & Ahangama
One of Sri Lanka’s most iconic images, the traditional stilt fishermen of the south coast balance on single poles driven into the seabed and fish using traditional rods – a technique unique to Sri Lanka’s southern coastline. Ride the coastal road between Koggala and Ahangama (13–18km east of Galle) in the early morning (6:00–9:00 AM) or late afternoon (4:00–6:00 PM) when the fishermen are active and the golden light creates extraordinary photographic opportunities.
Sinharaja Rainforest – 50km North
Sri Lanka’s last remaining lowland tropical rainforest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sinharaja is an 11,187-hectare biodiversity hotspot home to dozens of endemic bird species, purple-faced langurs, and rare amphibians. The ride 50km north from Galle on the A17 highway passes through rubber plantations, spice gardens, and tea estates with increasingly dramatic highland scenery. Rumassala Hill & Peace Pagoda
The Rumassala promontory east of Galle is topped by a Japanese-built Peace Pagoda (Shanti Stupa) offering panoramic views of Galle Fort, Unawatuna Bay, and the vast Indian Ocean. The ride up the short but steep hill road to the pagoda rewards you with some of the finest coastal views in Sri Lanka. The Rumassala forest below the pagoda is considered sacred in the Hindu Ramayana epic – tradition holds that Hanuman dropped a section of the Himalayan herb garden here during the great battle.
Tangalle – 65km East
One of the south coast’s most beautiful and least-crowded destinations, Tangalle is a serene fishing town with a stunning natural harbour and access to some of Sri Lanka’s most pristine beaches – Medaketiya, Marakolliya, and the wild Rekawa Beach where sea turtles nest at night. The 65km ride from Galle to Tangalle along the coastal road is a magnificent journey passing all of the south coast’s highlights. An excellent overnight destination for a multi-day south coast motorcycle tour.
Rekawa Turtle Beach – 70km East
Sri Lanka’s most important sea turtle nesting beach, Rekawa near Tangalle sees green turtles, loggerheads, and leatherbacks come ashore to nest almost every night year-round. Guided night watches from 7:00 PM are organised by the local conservation project – a unique and deeply moving wildlife experience. Combine with an overnight stay in Tangalle or ride east from Galle in the afternoon and return the same evening after the turtle watch.
Galle Dutch Reformed Church
One of the oldest Protestant churches in Sri Lanka, the Dutch Reformed Church inside Galle Fort was built in 1755 and is beautifully preserved. The floor of the church is paved with tombstones from the Dutch colonial era, and the whitewashed interior is a masterpiece of restrained colonial elegance. The church is still in active use and holds occasional services. One of the most atmospheric historic buildings on the entire south coast. Free entry during opening hours.

Galle to Mirissa & Weligama – 45km
The most popular day ride from Galle follows the A2 coastal highway east through Unawatuna, Koggala, Ahangama, Weligama, and on to Mirissa Beach. The road is flat, well-surfaced, and offers constant views of the Indian Ocean the entire way. Stop at stilt fishermen viewpoints between Koggala and Ahangama, swim at Unawatuna, learn to surf at Weligama, and end the day watching the sunset from Mirissa’s famous Parrot Rock viewpoint.
Galle to Hikkaduwa – 20km
Head west along the A2 coastal highway to Hikkaduwa for Sri Lanka’s best snorkelling, coral reef viewing, and surf breaks. The 20-minute ride passes through the fishing villages of Ambalangoda and Dodanduwa. Hire a snorkelling kit at Hikkaduwa beach and swim with turtles over the coral reef – one of the best snorkelling experiences in Sri Lanka accessible without a boat. Return via the beach road for a completely different perspective on the coastline.
Galle to Tangalle via South Coast – 65km
Continue east past Mirissa and Matara along the A2 highway to reach beautiful and relatively undiscovered Tangalle. The route passes Polhena reef beach (excellent shore snorkelling with turtles), Matara Fort (another Dutch colonial gem), the Dickwella blowhole, Hiriketiya surf beach, and the stunning Nilwella and Rekawa beaches. A perfect one-way route for riders continuing east towards Yala National Park and Arugam Bay.
Galle to Sinharaja Rainforest – 50km
Head north from Galle on the A17 highway through Baddegama and Neluwa into the foothills of the highlands to reach the Sinharaja Buffer Zone. The ride becomes increasingly dramatic as the road climbs through rubber and tea estates with the jungle closing in around you. A full day is recommended to include a guided rainforest walk and birdwatching inside the UNESCO World Heritage forest. Roads become rougher in the last section.
Galle to Ella via Hill Country – 190km
A spectacular multi-day route heads northeast from Galle through the interior highlands via Deniyaya, Haputale, and Bandarawela to reach Ella. This route through the southern highlands is one of Sri Lanka’s most dramatic and least-ridden motorcycle roads, passing through remote rubber estates, jungle waterfalls, and mountain villages with virtually no tourist traffic. We recommend avoiding night riding on rural roads outside Galle. The coastal town roads (Galle Fort area, Unawatuna beach road) are well-lit and manageable at night. However, rural roads north to Sinharaja or east beyond Hikkaduwa should only be ridden in daylight. The A2 coastal highway has street lighting in most populated sections but becomes darker between towns. In general, plan your riding for daylight hours and be back at your accommodation before dark on rural routes.
