The multi-storey building at the base contains floors of elaborately detailed dioramas depicting scenes from Buddhist hell and heaven with life-size figures. Hiriketiya Beach
One of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated small bays – a perfect horseshoe of white sand with a consistent beach break surf wave, creative beach cafes, and surf schools. The 49-metre colonial lighthouse built in 1889 is the tallest in Sri Lanka and the surrounding headland offers dramatic views of the open Indian Ocean. Mirissa Beach & Whale Watching
Sri Lanka’s most beautiful beach destination is 28km west. Ancient Buddhist cave temples carved into a massive granite rock outcrop that rises suddenly from the flat coconut palm landscape 20km north. Dating from the 1st century BC, the caves contain extraordinary reclining Buddha statues, ancient ceiling frescoes, and 500 steps climbing to a sky dagoba with panoramic views. The inland ride through rubber and coconut estates is one of the finest short inland routes on the south coast.
Galle Fort
Sri Lanka’s finest colonial heritage site and UNESCO World Heritage destination is 40km west. The perfectly preserved 17th-century Dutch fort with its 3km of ancient ramparts, cobblestone streets, colonial mansions, and boutique restaurants is extraordinary. Polhena Reef Beach (Turtle Snorkelling)

One of the finest bird sanctuaries on the south coast – a mosaic of lagoons, mangroves, and dry zone scrub 22km east, home to painted storks, pelicans, spoonbills, sea eagles, purple herons, and dozens of migratory species. At its best between October and March when migratory birds are present. A perfect morning birdwatching ride before the heat of the day.
Dickwella Fishing Harbour
Dickwella’s working fishing harbour at the base of town is one of the south coast’s most authentic and colourful small harbours. Traditional outrigger catamarans are launched at dawn and return with the morning catch by mid-morning. The beach below the harbour is a local swimming spot and gives a genuine sense of coastal Sri Lankan life removed from the tourist beach scene.
Yala National Park
Sri Lanka’s most famous wildlife reserve and home to the world’s highest density of wild leopards is 70km east via Tangalle and Hambantota. The ride east crosses the transition from the coastal south coast to the wild dry zone wilderness of the deep south. Book morning jeep safaris (5:30 AM) in advance.
