Bike Rental Colombo
Sri Lanka’s vibrant capital – a magnificent mix of Dutch colonial heritage, gleaming modern towers, ancient Buddhist temples, and a stunning 500-metre Indian Ocean seafront. The most complete city in South Asia to explore on two wheels, with every neighbourhood, every market, and every sunset viewpoint within 15 minutes’ ride. Your gateway to the entire island.

Why Rent a Bike in Colombo?
Explore beyond the tourist trail. Colombo’s most interesting neighbourhoods – the chaotic sensory explosion of Pettah, the elegant colonial mansions of Cinnamon Gardens, the authentic fishing communities of Wellawatte, the colonial churches of Kotahena, and the beach resort strip of Dehiwala and Mount Lavinia – are spread across the full length of the city. A rental bike lets you move between them in minutes rather than waiting for congested buses or spending a fortune on tuk tuk fares for every short journey between neighbourhoods.
Beat city traffic on two wheels. Colombo traffic can be formidable during rush hours, but on a scooter or small motorcycle you can filter through stationary cars, use the city’s network of quiet back streets, and find parking instantly in places where drivers spend 30 minutes searching and then pay expensive car park fees. Colombo’s traffic that frustrates car and taxi passengers simply does not apply to riders on two wheels.
Cost-effective city exploration. A rental bike at $8–$14 per day gives you unlimited freedom to hop between Colombo’s attractions, rooftop bars, street food markets, seafront cafes, and hidden temples without paying tuk tuk fares for every journey. A single day of tuk tuk hires across multiple Colombo neighbourhoods can cost more than three days of bike rental.
Gateway to the south coast. Some of Sri Lanka’s finest beaches – Bentota (65km), Hikkaduwa (100km), Galle Fort (120km), Weligama (150km), and Mirissa (160km) – are all accessible within 2–4 hours of riding south of Colombo via the scenic A2 coastal highway. Rent your bike in Colombo and head straight for the beach at the start of your Sri Lanka adventure.
Start your island adventure from the capital. Colombo is the perfect launch point for a Sri Lanka motorcycle tour in any direction. North to Negombo and the airport area (35km). East to Kandy and the hill country (115km). Northeast to Sigiriya and the Cultural Triangle (130km). South along the west coast to Galle and beyond. Whatever your Sri Lanka itinerary, Colombo is where it begins and a bike is the best way to begin it.

Driving Tips for Colombo
Famous Places to Visit in Colombo by Bike
Galle Face Green
Colombo’s most famous seafront promenade stretches 500 metres along the Indian Ocean and is the social heart of the city. Ride along the oceanfront esplanade for spectacular sunset views, stop at the legendary Galle Face Hotel (built 1864) for a sundowner on its colonial terrace, and watch kite flyers and street food vendors transform the green into a carnival at dusk. The broad promenade road beside the green is perfect for a leisurely evening scooter ride with the Indian Ocean breeze at your side. Free entry, always open, magical at sunset.
Colombo Fort & Pettah Bazaar
Colombo Fort is the historic commercial heart of the city, home to colonial-era buildings, the famous old clock tower, and the National Bank. Directly behind it, the Pettah bazaar is a sensory explosion of colour, sound, and smell – narrow streets crammed with fabric shops, spice merchants, electronic dealers, gem traders, and street food carts serving Sri Lankan classics. Ride carefully through Pettah’s lanes and absorb the authentic urban energy of a market that has been trading continuously for over 400 years. The most alive part of Colombo.
Gangaramaya Temple
One of Colombo’s most important and visually stunning Buddhist temples, Gangaramaya sits beside Beira Lake in the heart of the city. The temple complex is an extraordinary eclectic mix of Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian, and Chinese architectural styles and houses a remarkable museum of Buddha statues, antique vehicles, ivory carvings, and priceless religious artefacts donated by devotees from around the world. Visit during the evening puja ceremony (around 6:30 PM) for a deeply atmospheric experience of drumming, chanting, and candlelight reflected on the lake. Entry fee: LKR 300.
Beira Lake & Seema Malaka Temple
Beira Lake sits at the centre of Colombo and is home to the beautiful Seema Malaka – a floating Buddhist meditation platform designed by legendary Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. Two ornate platforms rise from the lake surface, connected by a walkway, and are stunning both in daylight and when illuminated against the night sky. Ride the lake perimeter road for views of the Colombo skyline reflected in the still water and watch resident monitor lizards basking on the stone embankments. One of Colombo’s most tranquil and beautiful spots.
National Museum of Colombo
Sri Lanka’s largest and most important museum houses an extraordinary collection of royal regalia, ancient weapons, bronze sculptures, traditional masks, and artefacts spanning 2,500 years of Sri Lankan history. The star exhibit is the last King of Kandy’s golden throne and crown – some of the most significant royal objects in South Asian history. Located in Cinnamon Gardens, the museum is set in beautiful colonial-era gardens that are perfect for a bike ride. Entry fee: LKR 1,500 for foreigners. Closed on Mondays.
Viharamahadevi Park – Cinnamon Gardens
Named after a legendary Sri Lankan queen, Viharamahadevi Park is Colombo’s largest and most beautiful public space – 60 acres of tree-lined avenues, manicured gardens, and a magnificent sitting Buddha statue in the upmarket Cinnamon Gardens neighbourhood. Ride through the park’s broad paths on a bicycle at dawn when the air is cool and joggers are out, then explore the surrounding Cinnamon Gardens area – Colombo’s most elegant district of colonial mansions, embassies, art galleries, and excellent restaurants. Free entry.
Colombo Lotus Tower
Sri Lanka’s tallest structure and the tallest tower in South Asia, the iconic Colombo Lotus Tower stands 356 metres tall on the banks of Beira Lake, shaped like a blooming lotus flower. Illuminated in slowly changing colours after dark, the Lotus Tower is Colombo’s most recognisable and most photographed landmark. The observation deck on the 17th floor offers breathtaking 360-degree views of Colombo’s skyline, the Indian Ocean, and the surrounding countryside on clear days. Ride to the lake shore for the finest ground-level view of the tower reflected in the water at night. Entry fee: LKR 1,000.
Independence Memorial Hall
Sri Lanka’s most significant national monument, Independence Memorial Hall was built to commemorate the country’s independence from British rule in 1948. The stunning lion-flanked throne pavilion is modelled on the ancient Audience Hall in Kandy and set in sweeping ceremonial gardens. The surrounding Independence Square area has been beautifully redeveloped into a stylish public space with fountains, paved promenades, and open-air cafes popular with Colombo’s young professionals. A perfect lunch stop on the city circuit. Free entry to the grounds.
Colombo Dutch Museum
Housed in a beautiful 17th-century Dutch colonial building in the heart of Pettah, the Dutch Museum tells the fascinating story of the Dutch East India Company’s 140-year rule of Sri Lanka from 1658 to 1796. The collection includes Dutch colonial furniture, maps, coins, paintings, and porcelain that document one of the most significant chapters in Sri Lankan history. One of Colombo’s most underrated attractions and a perfect stop during a Pettah market exploration ride. The building itself is one of the finest surviving examples of Dutch colonial architecture in Asia. Entry fee: LKR 500.
St. Lucia’s Cathedral – Kotahena
One of the largest Catholic cathedrals in Asia, St. Lucia’s in Kotahena can hold up to 6,000 worshippers in its magnificent Italian Renaissance and Baroque interior. Built in 1906, the cathedral’s brilliant white twin-towered facade dominates the Kotahena skyline and is particularly atmospheric during Sunday masses when the neighbourhood fills with worshippers. A short ride north of Colombo Fort through the authentic Kotahena neighbourhood – one of the city’s most interesting districts to ride through, with its mix of Tamil, Muslim, and Catholic communities. Free entry.
Red Mosque – Jami Ul Alfar
One of Colombo’s most photographed and beloved landmarks, the Jami Ul Alfar Mosque in Pettah is famous worldwide for its spectacular red and white candy-striped exterior. Built in 1909 in the Indo-Saracenic architectural style, this magnificent mosque has become a symbol of Colombo’s multicultural heritage and religious harmony. Located in the middle of the Pettah bazaar, it is easily combined with a market exploration ride through the surrounding street food lanes and fabric merchants. Modest dress required for entry; photography welcome from the street.
Mount Lavinia Beach
Colombo’s most popular beach, Mount Lavinia is 12km south of the city centre in the leafy suburb of the same name. Famous for its golden-sand beach, the legendary Mount Lavinia Hotel (built in 1806 as the British Governor’s residence), and spectacular sunset views over the Indian Ocean, Mount Lavinia is the perfect end-of-day ride after a full day exploring Colombo. The beachfront strip is lined with seafood restaurants, beach bars, and sunset terraces. The 25-minute coastal ride south along Galle Road through the Dehiwala and Ratmalana neighbourhoods gives an excellent cross-section of everyday Colombo life.
Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara
One of the most sacred Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka, Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara 11km northeast of Colombo is believed to have been visited by Lord Buddha himself during his third visit to the island. The magnificent temple complex features extraordinary painted murals depicting scenes from Buddhist history, a beautiful white dagoba, and elaborately decorated pavilions full of gilded Buddha statues. Kelaniya is particularly spectacular during the annual Duruthu Perahera festival in January. The ride northeast from Colombo through Kelaniya’s busy but fascinating streets is a genuine slice of local Sri Lankan life. Free entry.
Dehiwala Zoo
Sri Lanka’s national zoological gardens, Dehiwala Zoo is one of the finest zoos in Asia and home to over 3,000 animals including Asian elephants, leopards, crocodiles, chimpanzees, and a world-famous elephant performance. A full morning or afternoon is recommended to see the entire zoo. Entry fee: LKR 2,000 for foreigners.
Kollupitiya & Bambalapitiya Markets
Sri Lanka’s best fresh produce street markets line Galle Road through the Kollupitiya and Bambalapitiya neighbourhoods 3–5km south of Colombo Fort. Ride slowly south along Galle Road and stop at these vivid roadside markets for tropical fruits, fresh king coconuts, spices, and street food at genuine local prices. Early morning is the best time to visit (6:00–9:00 AM) when fresh produce arrives from farms across the Western Province and the market vendors set up their colourful stalls. The most authentic way to experience everyday Colombo life before the tourist crowds arrive.
