Arugam Bay Main Point
The heart of Arugam Bay surf culture and the famous right-hand point break that put Arugam Bay on the world surf map. Located at the southern end of the main beach, the wave breaks over a shallow reef producing long, hollow rides that work best in the early morning when the offshore wind is strongest. Even non-surfers enjoy watching the action from the rocks above the point. The beach surrounding Main Point is the social hub of Arugam Bay with the best beach cafes, hammock spots, and sunset views on the entire east coast.
Whiskey Point
One of Sri Lanka’s finest and most consistent surf breaks, Whiskey Point is a long right-hand point break 4km north of Arugam Bay that works at a different tide from Main Point – meaning it is often perfect when the main break is flat or blown out. The beach at Whiskey Point is beautiful and relatively uncrowded with a more relaxed atmosphere than the main bay. Pottuvil Point

The surrounding area is extraordinary – crocodiles inhabit the lagoon channels, sea eagles circle overhead, and elephants occasionally wander down to the lagoon edge at dusk. Pottuvil Lagoon
The Pottuvil Lagoon stretching north of Arugam Bay is one of Sri Lanka’s finest wildlife habitats – a vast estuary system of mangrove channels, open water, and sandbanks home to saltwater crocodiles, sea eagles, painted storks, purple herons, and a resident population of elephants that visit the lagoon edge to drink at dawn and dusk. Hire a local fisherman’s boat at the Pottuvil jetty for a magical early morning lagoon safari. Alternatively ride the lagoon-side road at dusk to watch elephants from your bike as the sun drops behind the jungle.
Elephant Rock Beach
A beautiful and relatively quiet beach 3km south of Arugam Bay, Elephant Rock is named after the distinctive elephant-shaped boulder that marks the northern end of the beach. The surf break at Elephant Rock is gentler than Main Point, making it popular with intermediate surfers and beginners wanting more manageable conditions. The beach itself is less crowded than the main bay and the rocky headland at the southern end offers excellent snorkelling in calm conditions – clear water over colourful reef.
Crocodile Rock
One of Arugam Bay’s most dramatic surf and wildlife spots, Crocodile Rock is a powerful reef break 5km south of town named after the saltwater crocodiles that inhabit the adjacent lagoon. The wave breaks over a shallow reef and is suitable only for experienced surfers – fast, powerful, and unforgiving. The wild beach surrounding the break is spectacular: wide, deserted white sand with jungle coming down to the waterline and absolutely no tourist development. A genuine wilderness surf experience unlike anything on the west or south coast.
Panama Village & Ancient Tank
The ancient fishing village of Panama sits 15km south of Arugam Bay at the end of the last sealed road before the Kumana wilderness begins. Panama has a beautiful beach, a small Hindu temple, and a freshwater tank (reservoir) built by ancient kings that is now a major elephant watering hole – large herds visit at dawn and dusk. The residents of Panama are some of the most welcoming people on the east coast and the village remains completely untouched by tourism. This is the real Sri Lanka, still intact.
Kumana National Park
One of Sri Lanka’s most important and least-visited national parks, Kumana is a 35,664-hectare wilderness sanctuary 35km south of Arugam Bay. Famous for extraordinary bird life – over 255 species including the largest breeding colony of painted storks in South Asia – Kumana also harbours elephants, leopards, sloth bears, and saltwater crocodiles. The park contains the ancient Kudumbigala monastery ruins, beautiful lagoons, and some of the most remote beaches in Sri Lanka. A full day is needed to explore it properly.
Kudumbigala Monastery Ruins
Hidden in the jungle south of Arugam Bay near Kumana, the ancient Kudumbigala Buddhist monastery complex dates back over 2,000 years. More than 250 cave shelters carved into granite boulders by ancient monks are scattered across a sacred rock outcrop in the heart of the jungle. The site remains an active meditation retreat for Buddhist monks. Climb to the summit rock for panoramic views of the Kumana wetlands, the Indian Ocean, and the vast dry zone jungle stretching to the horizon.
Lahugala Elephant Sanctuary
The Lahugala National Park 30km west of Arugam Bay has the highest density of Asian elephants per square kilometre in Sri Lanka. The small but critical park protects the Mahawewa and Kitulana tanks – ancient reservoirs that attract large herds of elephants particularly during the dry season (June to September) when water elsewhere is scarce. The evening elephant gathering at Lahugala tank is one of the most spectacular wildlife events in Asia – dozens of elephants bathing, drinking, and socialising at the water’s edge.
Okanda Beach & Devala Temple
One of the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage sites on the east coast, the Okanda Devala Temple sits on a dramatic rocky headland where the jungle meets the sea 30km south of Arugam Bay. The temple is the starting point for the annual Pada Yatra pilgrimage to Kataragama – thousands of pilgrims walk from Okanda through Yala to Kataragama every July. The main street running from the bus stand to Main Point is lined with surf shops, wood-fire pizza restaurants, coconut roti cafes, ayurvedic massage parlours, and handicraft stalls. Stilt Houses & Fishing Villages
The coastline north of Arugam Bay towards Pottuvil is dotted with traditional Muslim fishing villages built on the edge of the lagoon. Many of the older houses in these villages are built on wooden stilts over the water – a style unique to the east coast. Tracks beyond Panama towards Okanda and Kumana are rough, sandy, and require an adventure-capable motorcycle – we strongly recommend the Hero XPulse 200cc for these routes. Always fill up with fuel in Arugam Bay before heading south, carry at least 1 litre of water per person, and tell your guesthouse your planned route and expected return time. Peacocks and monkeys are common on the rural roads. Ride slowly at dawn and dusk when animals are most active, keep your headlight on at all times, and never ride wild east coast tracks after dark.
